Privacy against recruitment

• A club that publishes everything stops being a club. A club that publishes nothing loses the members it needs to stay solvent. The website is where that argument gets settled in public, so it should be designed as a decision taken on purpose, not as a compromise reached by accident.
• The workable line is usually this. Publish the character of the house, the calendar in outline, and the rules that govern guests. Keep the member list, the fee grid, the committee minutes, the ballot process and any photograph of an identifiable member behind an enquiry.
• Search is not the enemy of discretion. Someone who has just moved to the city and wants a padel club with floodlit courts and a coaching ladder will type that sentence into Google. A site that answers it in plain language is found by intent, which is the quietest form of recruitment there is.
• The photographs decide more than the words. Courts at seven in the morning, a table laid before service, a swept terrace, the pool before anyone is in it. A gallery that leaks the faces of members is not atmosphere, it is a breach, and a club rarely gets a second chance at it.
• Discretion is a design register, not an absence of information. Quiet type, long margins, one idea per screen, animations that move slower than the reader expects. That register is what a club buys, because the alternative is arguing with a theme built for a gym.

Enquiry, never sign up

• The verb carries the whole positioning. A house that says Join Now has told the reader it is a leisure centre. Enquire, Write to the Secretary, or Request the Membership Pack all say the opposite, and they cost nothing to say.
• Ask for less than instinct suggests. Name, email, telephone, category of interest, how the person came to know the club, and one open field. Every additional required field is a small insult to someone who may already be known to two of your members.
• If the constitution requires a proposer and a seconder, put that on the page rather than in the reply. It reads as confidence, it filters correctly, and it saves both sides a month of polite correspondence that was always going to end the same way.
• Say what happens next in the club's own words. Who reads the enquiry, roughly when a reply is sent, whether there is a list and whether it is long. A club that is honest about a two year wait is more attractive than one that is vague about it.
• The confirmation screen and the acknowledgement email are part of the house. Not a green tick and a marketing footer. A short paragraph, signed by the office, in the same voice as the rest of the site.
